Organization

The initial parts of this project will be completed unfunded and privately, to develop the basic infrastructure.  Many of the resources for this to be possible already exist.

Once the infrastructure is in place, 1 in 5 Stories will actively solicit grants and donations to grow the project, as well as additional stories.

Simultaneously, the project will begin penetrating the media landscape of the San Francisco Bay Area, where the independent living movement began over 30 years ago.

As the project expands, and grant money allows its improvement, the television, radio, and print aspects of the project will expand to other major media markets.

At some point during this process, when it makes economic, organizational, and practical sense, a not-for-profit corporation will be formed to manage this project going forward.  A balanced board of directors consisting of disability advocacy, nonprofit, grassroots/netroots organizing, and other experts, will be appointed.

One or several part time employees will manage the project; a national network of volunteer media producers will actively seek out and acquire additional stories, partnering with existing disability advocacy organizations as needed.  Website and media production will be outsourced or donated as appropriate.

The website will always be 100% free to all users, and 100% accessible.  Continued funding will be sustained through grants, fund raising, donations, and annual memberships.
